Public Space

Public Space is an area where everyday common people don’t matter the age, gender, or race congregate. Such places include shopping malls, parks, streets, movie theaters, school, churches, and much much more where people to meet with others, spend money, do business, or loiter. But sometimes these places aren’t so “public” to where everyone can come. The first article was about shopping malls. It really made no sense to me and I really didn’t get the point it was trying to make. In the second article it was talking about how Murphy Davis, who is the cofounder of the Open Door Community, made an analysis on Woodruff Park which is in the center of downtown Atlanta. The old park was first a place with playgrounds, restrooms, bathrooms, and benches with a bunch of grass area. The city then renovated it and now is only consist of concrete, stone, and some grass. The city did this because of the homeless people that were living there. In my opinion by doing that it made the park worse. In the third article it talked about cell phone etiquette. I remember when cell phones were becoming popular and everyone never used them in public. Today it seems I can’t walk into a room and not see someone on their cell phone. It’s CRAZY!!!!!! People think it’s okay to be in a place where it’s suppose to be quiet and practically yell to the person they are talking to on the other line. I don’t want to know or be brought into their conversation either. That is their private life and I want nothing to do with it. After reading these articles I now have a better understanding of what this unit is about and what we are writing about.
